The historic heart of Aldinga - a 1850s farming village laid out by local farmer Lewis Fidge, with a main street of 19th-century buildings surviving today.
Born as a farming village
Aldinga township originated in the 1850s as a farming community on the Old Coach Road south of Adelaide. The original village was laid out in 1857 by a local farmer named Lewis Fidge and quickly acquired the usual 19th-century village essentials: a hotel, a church, a blacksmith's shop, and a handful of general stores.
Survival
Like many colonial villages it suffered population decline in the 1870s and 1880s but survived thanks to its position on the Old Coach Road between Adelaide and Cape Jervis. Today the heritage main street sits in the middle of the wider Aldinga / Aldinga Beach urban area but still retains a village feel with several 1850s-era buildings intact.
